The ubiquitous coffee kiosk

coffeekiosk081708m
Sunday, August 17, 2008. Java Junkie coffee kiosk near Thrashers Corner in Snohomish County. (Pigma Micron 08. Drawn on location, gouache paint added later.)

I lived in three states —Nevada, California and Virginia— before moving to Washington. The coffee kiosk was a new thing for me here. There seems to be one in every suburban parking lot. Some have even been controversial because the baristas wear provocative clothes to attract more customers and tips —they call those kiosks "Sexpressos." (Read this Seattle Times story for more on that.)

Most people drive up in their cars to get their drinks, but during the 20 minutes I took to do the sketch the only customer came on foot.

I'm going to try to sketch more of these kiosks. One thing I really like is that they all look different, which gives them a unique personality versus the usual chains.

Michelle is also telling me right now that I should do a coffee table book of coffee kiosks drawings, similar to Kramer on the Seinfeld episode. Well, that's an idea!

• Live in Snohomish County? Here are more drawings around that area.

  1. Hey, Gabi--I've only lived in one other state besides Washington, and in Texas these would be taco stands! Although espresso is beginning to catch on there (I can always count on the ubiquitous Starbucks--I don't usually patronize them in Washington but am always glad I have that option other places!)--Carol C.
