A year later

It's been one year since I started this blog. One year and three days to be precise. I went back to my sketchbooks from around that time and found a couple of pages that caught my eye and never made it to the blog. They somehow represent a little of what the blog has become: sketches of everyday life — like the animals I sketched at Petco one day we went to check out fish tanks and some cool chairs at a Scandinavian furniture store — and drawings for my son like this one where he's a firefighter putting out a fire. To celebrate the anniversary I also decided to give the blog a little flag update. I hope to change the flag often (ever since I saw the changing mastheads that Tommy Kane comes up with I've wanted to try something like that. My apologies for stealing the idea Tommy!)

  1. Congratulations on your one year anniversary! I really enjoy your sketches of everyday life, and I like the new flag, too!

  2. How cool would it be to be able to send an illustrator out instead of a photographer to cover some event? I think it would transform the mundane. Of course, a good photographer will also go beyond the literal translation ....

jim, that's my dream job (to cover an event as an illustrator) and hope to figure out a way to do it soon (hint: hire me to do that will you?). check out the work of Olivier Kugler, a regular contributor to The Guardian, who travels the world and draws: http://www.olivierkugler.com/
