School busing

© The Seattle Times
Here's last week's illo for The Seattle Times opinion page. In the article, the author talks about his experiences as a 9-year-old kid back in the early 70s when school desegregation was happening. Kids were being bused across town so there would be a better racial mix in the classrooms. Instead of coming up with a 'serious' concept I liked the idea of ilustrating his experiences in the context of a 'black and white' school bus shape. I was glad the editors went for it over my two other concepts. Gouache, ink and charcoal pencil on Arches watercolor paper.

Great idea -- and how neat it is to see the evolution of the illustration. I'm glad they chose yours!

  2. Gosh...this is just great. I really enjoy and appreciate your process. I definitely think your "not-so-serious" idea was perfect for the piece.
