Seattle Art Museum

©The Seattle Times
For the news coverage of the new Seattle Art Museum opening (Saturday, May 5th), I pitched the idea of a sketchbook approach to my art director at the newspaper. She liked the idea and so did the editors. Here's the final result, which was published Sunday. I sketched the artwork at the museum on two different days, two hours each day (some sketches had to be edited out for space reasons, like the mouse sculpture and the Mercedes Benz coffin from the African Art collection). The drawing of the building I did it from floorplants, photo reference and notes taken outside and inside the building. You can read the full report and see photo galleries here
at The Seattle Times website. A pdf version of the page is also available. Hope you like it.

  1. Like it? I LOVE it! Gabi, you are so talented and your work is just so fun to look at. I'm going to subscribe to you via Bloglines right now. Don't want to miss one of your posts!

  2. I think this is great Gabi, love the whole idea, the layout, it is informative and of course the sketching is so well done! And it is very impressive (impressive amounts of money as well!!) Good luck with the opening on Saturday and the future.

  3. Fantastic deconstruction of the museum!

If that was in my newspaper, I'd be saving the page for sure. The sketches work very well and the sketch/diagram balance is just right.

  4. And, I'm printing the pdf to keep!

  5. Very cool!!! I like it.

  6. I went to a contemporary art fair in Shanghai recently, which was a real eye-opener. Chinese contemporary art has come leaps and bounds from the watery Zen landscapes to huge canvases of strange-looking beings. The prices being asked and paid were huge too.
Oriental, if not Chinese, my print of Jean-Léon Gérôme's painting,, bought some time ago from, is as lovely as ever.
